How to store coffee properly to get the most out of it?

You know that perfect feeling when you open a packet of freshly brewed coffee from your favourite roaster (Goriffee, of course!) and you’re enveloped in that wonderful aroma, smelling the promise of delicious sips that will accompany you every morning, cheer you up at lunch, or make your afternoon more enjoyable?

Of course it does, otherwise we wouldn’t have met on this site! 🙂 But how to store coffee so that you can enjoy its perfect aroma and taste for as long as possible? Just follow these tips:

An airtight, opaque container is essential

Coffee is a food, so freshness is really important. This is influenced by the so-called. 4V:

Air+ Humidity+ Lots oflight + Hightemperature

Um… Well, okay, we’ve helped ourselves to a bit of a mnemonic here, but it doesn’t change the fact that these four factors will influence exactly how long your coffee stays fresh.

The most important thing is to ensure that the coffee beans come into contact with the air on which the coffee oxidises only minimally. Therefore, get an airtight container to protect it. Ideally one from which the air can also be sucked out (i.e. a vacuum).

And while you’re at it, be sure to choose a dark one to protect it from the light at the same time. Yes, yes, we really like coffee beans too, unfortunately transparent containers are not really suitable for storing it. An airtight, dark container like this will also prevent moisture from getting in, so you’ve got three out of four factors covered.

And the temperature? It’s really enough if you don’t store the coffee near heat sources such as the stove, oven, etc. Also, a shelf that gets sunlight most of the day is not ideal. A dark, cool place with a stable temperature is ideal.

  1. Buy coffee regularly in smaller batches

The easiest way to always have fresh coffee? Buying it regularly in smaller batches that you can drink in a reasonable amount of time. In a perfect world, you’d buy coffee about once every two weeks, but it’s perfectly fine if your supply lasts you a month.

Our coffee subscription is perfect for just these cases, so you can count on having fresh coffee at home all the time! The key is to always check the roasting date of your coffee when you buy it. You can also buy coffee every week, but if it’s not freshly roasted, you’re not doing yourself much good.

  1. Freezing coffee – a good idea?

Freezing coffee as a method of long-term storage is a topic that divides the coffee community, but in general this method of storage can also be considered. However, a few points need to be observed. First of all, divide your coffee into approximately one-week batches so that you don’t have to take it out and return it to the freezer. This prevents moisture from condensing on the coffee, which would then freeze and ruin the beans.

Remember that coffee absorbs odours. Always put it in an airtight bag in the freezer. If you have the option, ideally vacuum-packed.

If you want to use coffee from the freezer, take it out at least a couple of hours before use. This will bring it up to room temperature and also deal with the aforementioned condensation.

And that’s it. Simply put – just buy the amount of coffee appropriate to your consumption and store it in a dark, airtight container in a dark, cool place at a stable temperature. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy it for the longest time without losing quality.
