Home coffee making 2: How to French press

french-press-blog

We continue with our recipes for home coffee preparation, prepared for you by our colleague and Slovak barista champion Šimon Janík. Probably the most popular home coffee preparation method is French Press. Although the name of the coffee maker might suggest that it originated in France, it was first patented in 1929 by the Milanese designer Attilio Calimani.

You need:

  • 30g coffee, 500g water, 96 degrees, medium coarse grind
  • Preheat your frenchpress with hot water
  1. step: place the French Press on the scale, prepare the stopwatch
  2. Step 1: Pour in 30g of freshly ground coffee
  3. Step 1: Pour in 500g of water at a time and mix thoroughly
  4. Step 4: Wait 4 minutes and break the crust with a spoon
  5. step: put on the metal strainer and slowly squeeze the plunger and you can serve

A little tip for the end: do not drink filtered coffee immediately after its preparation, wait about 2-3 minutes for it to cool down slightly. It has the most developed flavours at about 70-60 degrees.

Serve the coffee immediately after preparation, don’t leave it in the French press “in the dark”. If you do not separate the coffee from the water, extraction will still take place, which can lead to an unpleasant taste. Cheers 🙂
